Continue reading »]]> It has been way too long since I’ve posted to my blog! I’m surprised I remember my login. After finishing grad school I started working at the University of Chicago, and most of the projects I’m working on can’t really be shared yet.

However, I have recently gotten really excited about lasers. Laser cutters specifically. I’ve been trying out a lot of different things including making jewelry.

I have some new projects I’m working on that I’m pretty excited about so keep your eyes peeled for future posts. What a gross phrase, right? I used it on purpose.

I made laser cut business cards a while back, and ever since I’ve been wanting more time to try out different projects.

The first thing I cut was a deer skull engraving I made for my grandfather for christmas. You might have seen the original drawing I did just for fun. Turns out the line work translates really well.

Continue reading »]]> This is a full version of a tutorial that I created for an independent study that I did at UIC during my final semester in Biomedical Visualization. I created a base mesh for the ear using a tutorial I found on youtube and then used goz to take the model into Zbrush for additional sculpting and painting. This is meant to be a basic project as an introduction to the program and workflow. Hopefully you will find this useful!

Bacteria World.

This animation starts with ciliated bacteria swimming around in what looks like an underwater world. Then it shows spherical bacteria replicating by mitosis before zooming into the cell wall and showing the lipid bilayer with penicillin binding to transpeptidase. This is part of what will be a longer animation in the future. I created it using Maya.

I’m blown away by how cool this is. I’ve been using the Visible Human Project as a reference and as a resource in studying anatomy for a while now. One of my professors was actually a partner in its creation.

Background

The body came from a man who was executed by lethal injection for murder. He donated his body for scientific research or medical use.

The body was encased and frozen in a mixture of gelatin and water, and then photographed as it was ground away at 1 millimeter intervals. The body was also scanned to create axial and coronal cross sections. The result is a data set of cross sectional photographs of the body.

How the photographs were made

“The animation was played fullscreen on a computer, which was moved around by an assistant while being photographed in a dark environment. The resulting images are long-exposure “light paintings” of the entire cadaver. Variations in the movement of the computer during each exposure created differences in the shape of the body throughout the series.”

Continue reading »]]> ….er, endocast. An endocast is the cast of the neurocranium of the skull. There are three layers of meninges surrounding the brain: pia, arachnoid, and dura mater. Cerebrospinal fluid is between the pia mater and the brain. Taking a cast of the neurocranium gives us the best indication we can get of what a fossilized specimen’s brain was like. The following are photos to show the process of removing the endocast of G3B8, which I mentioned here and here.
